Day 13 of Blogtober, and the prompt was ‘movies’! Now, I have to say that, after 12 days, I’m now running slightly behind by a day, but at least it’s only a day and not a month – so that’s what I call #winningatlife! We love watching films in The Newby Tribe but we do all like very different genres! Paul will happily sit and watch action films and war films (Full Metal Jacket being his favourite!). Little Sir will choose Ninjago movies over everything else, and Little Miss has just fallen in love with High School Musical (being honest, I’m very happy to sing along with that one too!) As for me? Well, I love films guaranteed to make you smile! I’m one for a bit of escapism, so with that in mind, here are my top 5 films guaranteed to make you smile – and you might not know some of them!!

The Other Sister
This is one of my ultimate all time favourite films – and I don’t know anyone else who has seen it! Starring a young Juliette Lewis and Diane Keaton, it tells the story of Carla Tate, a young lady with learning difficulties, who falls in love with Danny, a young man with similar learning difficulties. It is a beautifully told story about young people fighting for and finding their independence against all odds. It is full of hilarious one liners, and you will find you smile from the beginning to the end. If you’ve never watched it (and I can almost guarantee that 99% of people haven’t) and you like comedy dramas you have to watch it! I can promise that you won’t be disappointed!!
Another one of my favourites, Last Holiday stars Queen Latifah as a store clerk with big dreams that she doesn’t think will ever be fulfilled. When she finds out through a routine medical exam, that she only has a short time to live, she throws caution to the wind, and decides to fulfil all of her dreams before she dies. Although this sounds like a bit of a weepy, I can promise that is a lovely, inspirational film which will definitely encourage you to seize the day!
The Fighting Temptations
This was a film that I’d never heard of before but was signposted to it by my mum on one of the movie channels on the TV – and I fell in love with it! Starring Cuba Gooding Jnr and a very young Beyonce, the story follows a New York City advertising executive who has to go back to him small hometown to claim inheritance left to him by his aunt. The twist is, in order to claim it, he has to fulfil her final wish by leading the town’s Gospel Choir to success! While the story line is nothing to write home about, and you can almost write it yourself, the film is full of fantastic, uplifting Gospel music guaranteed to get you toe tapping and smiling all the way through.
Eddie The Eagle
This film is one that only came out in 2016, and I wasn’t sure that it would be my cup of tea. However, we ended up watching it on DVD as we were given it by someone, and it is just the perfect Sunday afternoon film. The storyline follows Michael Edwards, aka Eddie the Eagle, as he trains and competes in the 1988 Winter Olympics. I thought I knew the story of Eddie the Eagle, but it turns out that I hadn’t realised he was a self funded plasterer and it was his sheer determination that made sure he even qualified for the Olympics. It’s such a lovely film and makes you realise that, no matter what your dreams, total blindsided confidence will get you there in the end!
Muppets Christmas Carol
Now, this is my utmost favourite film of all time! I’m not really a kids film fan, but this is one that we used to watch as children at Christmas time and it is so utterly brilliant, funny, heart warming and perfect! For anyone who doesn’t know (and I can’t imagine who that is!) this is the reimagining of Charles Dickens Christmas Carol, told by muppets! With the addition of Michael Caine, who’s singing has to be heard to be believed, this is truly the perfect film to watch at Christmas. After all, who doesn’t love singing vegetables and watching penguins at their ice skating party???
So there you are, my top 5 films guaranteed to make you smile. I’d love to have some other recommendations of films guaranteed to make you smile that I can add to our ‘must watch’ list! Please do let me know in the comments and we’ll get watching!
