When I woke up this morning, I didn’t expect today to turn out like it has. In fact, the sun was shining, the sky was blue with fluffy white clouds, it was a beautiful cold crisp autumnal day. Nothing particularly taxing lay ahead for this Monday morning – school work with Little Miss, maybe some baking this afternoon, picking up Little Sir and then cuddling up in the living room after Nursery before tea, bath and bed (them, not me!). I planned to follow that up with a night on the sofa as I’m alone tonight, watching the next instalment of Victoria. What a lovely day I had planned!
Well…that didn’t happen! This is what actually took place today.
8am: Little Sir had had rather a messy accident in the bathroom this morning which required a pick axe to get it off both him and the toilet seat. Not the most relaxing start to the morning – but still..not a complete disaster!
8.30am: Little Miss spilled her breakfast cereal all over herself and the floor – rice crispies everywhere! OK, accidents happen – a quickish clean up and it was all sorted!
10am: Doing jigsaws with Little Miss to help both with her problem solving skills and her fine motor skills. Lovely activity until we couldn’t find the final piece. This wouldn’t have been a huge problem but she did not react well to it!
11.30am: One of the cats decides today is a good day to bring a vole into the house. Not a slow vole – not a dead vole – but the world’s fastest vole! No problem, I definitely had it cornered and it could wait until Paul comes home tomorrow. Things are definitely taking a turn for the worse now.
1.00pm: Thought it would be a good idea to tidy up after the kids and get the house looking a bit better. Swung one of the kids chairs around and knocked a full can of coke all over the carpet. Thankfully came up with a whole load of water but I really didn’t need this!
2.00pm: Wondered why the cats were both eager to see behind the shoe rack – it transpires said vole is not in the safety of the hiding place I had created for it, but had escaped and was now hiding behind the shoe rack! Utter nightmare! Spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to use a humane trap, where to put it, and how to keep the cats from stalking the vole.
3.00pm: Little Sir arrives home definitely more tired than normal. Had a report from Nursery that he hit another child today (which is unusual for him) and he was really cross about it. Cue 1.5 hour tantrum. I still have no idea what that was about but he was definitely angry about something!
5.00pm: Little Miss decides that she would like to write a letter to a friend. Lovely idea and the first time she has wanted to do any writing. Hmmm, maybe I should have foreseen the meltdown over not being able to spell ‘work’ or form her ‘d’ correctly. Cue a 20 minute tantrum. By this point my head is thumping.
6:00pm: Decided to bring toys into the living room and put CBeebies on to calm everyone down. Answered the phone to my mum and had a 10 minute chat in the kitchen. A lovely end to the day…until Little Sir decided to pull Little Miss’s hair! The final straw – I give up!
So that was the end of the day as I decided I really couldn’t take any more of Monday – I put the kids to bed, made dinner for me and spent the rest of the night on the sofa. What a day! Let’s hope Tuesday is just a little bit calmer!
