Advent Calendars For Grown Ups – Is It Worth It?

For years, adults have been buying children advent calendars! When I was small there were only two choices – chocolate or picture ones. So obviously we had to have the chocolate one! However, as time has gone on, advent calendars seem to have become more and more elaborate, and really more like a gift itself. There are lego ones, play mobile ones, stationery ones, cuddly toy ones – the list seems to go on. But this year, I noticed more than ever that there seems to be a big shift towards adult advent calendars. I’m pretty sure they have been around for a while, but I never really noticed them until this year – and so was determined to try one out.

Having read around online, there were a few which took my interest, namely the Liberty one, the No 7 one from Boots, and the Marks and Spencer one. In reality I knew I would need to justify to myself that spending pounds on a calendar just for me was worth it, so I quickly dismissed the Liberty one as coming in £165 was definitely more than I could justify (even if it looked incredible!). I then considered the No.7 one and the Marks and Spencer one. At a good value £39, the No.7 seemed like a great choice. However, when I looked at the Marks and Spencer advent calendar I knew I was onto a winner!

The Marks and Spencer calendar retails at £250! Yep, you read that right. However – if you purchase £35 worth of clothing, you get it for a steal at only £35. As I needed to buy the children’s pyjamas for the Christmas Eve box, it worked out perfectly. And I have to be honest, I have been absolutely delighted! So far I have only opened 12 days, but so far I have received:

  • Bee Lovely Hand Cream
  • Super Acids X-Treme Acid Rush Peel
  • Eyeko Liquid Eye Liner
  • Ultrasun Face sun protection
  • Liquid Gold (to firm the skin)
  • Autograph nail varnish in cranberry
  • Nails Inc nail varnish in cranberry
  • Emma Hardie cleansing balm
  • Mini brush powder
  • Anti-wrinkle cream
  • Brow tamer

It has been like having Christmas every day, and I’ve loved opening the little boxes and finding the treasures inside.  I was a little worried that I would be opening a whole load of things that I wouldn’t want, or everything would be tiny samples, but I was worried for no reason.  Aside from not particularly needing firming cream or anti-wrinkle cream as yet, everything else has been perfect, and most has been a full size.

So would I buy it again next year? Without a shadow of a doubt.  Having something that is just for me, that the children aren’t at all interested in and makes me feel just a little pampered. What a lovely start to the festive season!

Disclosure: I wasn’t asked to review the advent calendars, I just really love it and thought you might too!

Oh that’s such a good idea – I hadn’t thought about it! It would be a perfect gift for my mother in law next December!
