Here at the Newby Tribe, we love our potatoes! We tend to have them with pretty much every meal, and in a whole variety of different styles – mashed, roasted, boiled, and our favourite, sautéed! Over the years we have found that different  types of potato are great for different things – and at this time of the year we love to have new potatoes as they are so versatile and quick to cook.  One of our absolute favourite Friday night meals is spicy spuds – and we have discovered a lovely new potato  being sold in Tesco’s which works brilliantly for this recipe!  Cypriot New Potatoes are a lovely little potato variety which have a gorgeous sweet, earthy taste, which really complements the spiciness of the mustard.

So, here is our recipe for our Spicy Cypriot Spuds – a quick and easy dinner time meal which can be adapted for all tastes of spiciness really easily!


(serves 4)

250g of mince beef

1 tin of chopped tomatoes

1 onion roughly chopped

750g Cypriot New Potatoes

Grated cheese (any type and quantity you fancy)

Small pot of sour cream

Mustard (any variety you prefer – I opt for American Style Mustard)

Cypriot New Potatoes

First, heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry off the onions. You want them to be in big chunks with just a little colour on them – definitely not caramelised!

Next, add the mince and cook it through, before adding the tin of tomatoes. Let this simmer gently, adding salt and pepper if you wish.

At the same time, boil a pan of water and add the Cypriot New Potatoes to it. Boil for about 10 minutes until they are almost cooked through. Then slice them into about 1cm slices, and sauté in a pan of oil until they have a beautiful colour to them.
