Gousto Review : Delicious Meals From Scratch!

I love to cook! But since having the kids I’ve really struggled to get my motivation together to cook an evening meal for us all.  The biggest problem has been that what the kids want to eat, and what I want to eat, very rarely come to the same thing! Being only 4 and 6, they would much prefer beans on toast to a fancy spread, but it just doesn’t hit the spot for me.  So I’ve been finding that I eat what the kids eat, don’t feel satisfied so end up snacking all evening! Which isn’t doing a huge amount of good for my waistline! So when Gousto got in contact to see if we would like to try their recipe box for a few days, I jumped at the chance! No shopping, no measuring and a recipe that is almost guaranteed to work? What’s not to like??

The box came with all the ingredients needed for 2 meals and 2 recipe cards.  A lovely surprise was also finding a solid wooden spoon in the box too. After all, you can’t have too many wooden spoons can you!?

The first recipe we tried was Posh Burgers and Chips.  Paul was very excited for this one (he isn’t the most adventurous eater on the planet!) and I loved the idea of making my own ketchup!  I was surprised by how simple it was to follow the recipe.  When I’ve tried similar boxes before I would often find that the steps in the recipe didn’t always go in a logical order – but the Gousto recipes led me through in a very sensible way!  There was nothing tricky involved but at the end I felt as though I could take on Masterchef! Who knew that a homemade tomato ketchup was so simple – I’m never buying a made bottle again!

Our second recipe was Hoi Sin Meatballs on a chinese style rice.  Paul wasn’t so keen on this one (but to be fair he’s not really a rice eater!).  But he did agree that the meatballs were utterly delicious. I’ll definitely be making them again.  I wasn’t so keen on the Chinese Rice part either, but it was fun to try different dishes.

All in all, I was super impressed with the Gousto box.  I love that I can give the kids meals that they love, whilst knowing I can have a more grown up meal in the evening with little effort on the shopping front.  It also felt really good to get back to doing proper cooking.  Little Sir made it for me when he said ‘Mummy, it’s just like a restaurant in here with all this cooking!’.  Now how perfect is that!

The lovely people at Gousto have got an exclusive offer for readers.  A £20 discount of each of your 1st and 2nd Gousto orders, on any sized box!
