What To Do When The World Has Gone Mad

So, another thing that many people thought wouldn’t come to pass has! Brexit happened and now Donald Trump is the 45th President of the USA. On both occasions I went to bed fully expecting to wake up to normality, and on both occasions I have been left with a slightly sick feeling in my stomach.

The question is, what do you do when the world has gone mad?

Sit in a corner and wail at the world? Blame and curse and swear and disagree with the other half of the country? Get mad and get even? Well, even though all of those have their benefits, I’ve woken with a different mindset.

Make sure my little piece of the world is as good as I can make it!

I can’t control the rest of the world. Raging against decisions isn’t going to get me anywhere (although I might feel slightly better afterwards.) Worrying about the future, the type of world my children are going to grow up in, is very tempting, but worrying about something I can’t predict and can’t change seems quite futile.

So I’m just making a pact with myself. To make sure that me and mine have the best possible life I can make. To only worry about the things I can change and try to push to one side those I can’t. I can’t fix the world but I can:

  • Ensure that Little Miss makes great progress in her learning and continues to grow in confidence.  This is my biggest opportunity to make sure that she can take on the world as a strong young lady who knows her own mind and doesn’t follow the crowd regardless.
  • Help Little Sir to continue to develop empathy, and know that kindness is one of the most important qualities a person can have.
  • Make sure that we are a strong family unit who have each other’s backs and everyone knows they are loved and valued unconditionally.
  • Give the children the confidence to be independent, critical thinkers who know what they want and how to get there, but also understand how to empathise and work with others.

I can’t change the world.

But I can do my best to make sure that we do the best we can in the world we have. And that is the most important thing!

Thanks so much for your lovely comment. I decided that I did need to do something I was in control of, and this seemed to be the only thing I could do! x

Absolutely! They don’t have any understanding of what we are watching on TV or why – but they do understand how we treat them and what we are trying to teach them! Thanks for reading.
