Even when we didn’t have the children we absolutely loved watching films at Christmas. Is there anything better than snuggling down on the couch, hot chocolate in hand, fire on and losing yourself in a film? Since the children came home, we have wanted to introduce our favourites to them. We tried last year, but they really were too little to sit through a whole film! However, this year it’s all about the films! There are so many to choose from – but here are our top Christmas Family Films to watch this season!
Muppets Christmas Carol
This has to be our all time favourite film. Even after so many times of watching, I still laugh at the jokes, sing along with the characters and get a tear in my eye at the end of it. It’s just so full of christmas goodness and warmth! I love the fact that it is a classic story, told in a way that makes it so accessible for children. I can’t wait to watch the children watching it – I know they are going to love it as much as we do!
Perhaps not strictly a Christmas film (although it is definitely set in winter) I adore the sentiment of this film. If you haven’t heard of it before, it tells the story of a single woman who is told she only has a short time to live. Before the diagnosis, she is careful and frugal with her life, but has huge dreams about what she would love to do. So, after being diagnosed, she sets out to fulfil her every dream. Don’t worry about the story being too sad, it really is a heart warming, beautiful tale from beginning to end, with a lovely moral included!
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
Dr Seuss has to be one of my favourite authors of all time. I love reading his books to the kids – although I think I probably get more enjoyment from them than they do! The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is another story with a great moral. If you haven’t come across it before, it is essentially Scrooge retold! I could see some children begin a little scared of the Grinch throughout the story, but the ending is just lovely!
Miracle on 34th Street
This is my ultimate Christmas film! The one which tells me Christmas is here. I adore both versions and really don’t have a favourite. I’ll pretty much watch whichever is on the TV at the time. For me, it is particularly great especially for children who may be beginning to question whether Santa is real or not. After watching this film, they will be in doubt at all!
Elf has to be on this list! I think it is possibly one of the funniest Christmas films around. As readers of this blog will know, we do have an Elf ourselves (Ellie!). So I think the children are going to love finding out where she comes from! Will Farrell plays a fantastic Elf and will definitely appeal to the childish side in all of us. I am a little concerned that the children might want sweets for breakfast but…well it’s Christmas so why not?!
Santa Claus The Movie
This was my favourite film as a child. I don’t remember there being too many Christmas films on when I was small (we are talking over 30 years ago though), but this one has stuck in my memory all these years. I was delighted to find that I could download a copy to watch with the children, so it’s now been added to the list. The fact that the film tells the story of Christmas Eve will cement all we’ve been telling them – and seeing the North Pole and the Elves busy at work will bring it all to life!
So these are our top Christmas films. I know that there are few favourites out there that haven’t made the list (It’s A Wonderful Life being one of them – but I truly dislike that film! It makes me sad rather than happy!!).
So we’d love to know what your favourite films are and anything we should add to our list!
